Endorsements and Disqualification

There are a whole range of traffic offences which may result in ‘penalty points’ being added to your driving licence. These may ultimately cost you the right to drive. The number of points added to your licence is decided by a court on conviction for a specific offence. These points remain on your licence for eleven years from the date of conviction for offences relating to driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, and four years from the date of the offence or of conviction in other cases. If a total of 12 points is built up within three years, the driver is automatically disqualified from driving for a minimum of six months, or one year if the driver was disqualified in the previous three years. In addition, every offence for which you can be given penalty points carries a discretionary disqualification, decided by the court at the time of conviction. This is usually between a week and a few months. Serious offences such as dangerous driving and drink driving carry a mandatory disqualification of 12 months or more and are likely to result in a prison sentence if injury or death was caused. If you drive while disqualified you can receive a prison sentence and your car may be confiscated.
